Fermoy 2-06 O’Donovan Rossa 1-10
The boys from West Cork arrived up to Fermoy on Tuesday evening May 7th to put up a challenge to our senior team in this league fixture. We had a great battle in the championship of 2023 where Rossa were victorious by one point and we are due to meet again this year. We knew that this would be a difficult assignment but as we were at home so it was hoped that we would put in a good performance.
As soon as the ref threw in the ball it was evident that both teams were going to have a cut off of each other. This was not seen on the scoreboard but it was still an entertaining game. Rossa opened the scoring in the 6th minute with a point from paly. David Lardner kicked a close in free over the bar to equalise on 10 mins and then scored a lovely point from play on 13 mins after a great run and pass from his brother Greg. Rossa started playing the ball around for the next ten or so mins and proceeded to fire over three unanswered points. They scored a close in free on 15 mins before firing over a couple of lovely points on 22 and 27 mins respectively. We responded with a well taken Padraig de Roiste point in the 28th min before a Rossa free on 30 mins finished off the first half scoring. Certainly a very low scoring affair and it was hoped we would witness a lot more scoring in the second.
Half-time: Fermoy 0-03 O’Donovan Rossa 0-05.
The second half began and we were no sooner settled down to watch what was about to unfold when Rossa scored 1-01 in the first minute. A high floating ball in to the Fermoy square looked to be heading for a point but the ball was batted down, landed into their full forwards hands and he gratefully smashed the ball in to the net. Straight from our kick out the ball was lost again due to another mistake and we were punished again as the ball was kicked over the bar. They were not finished yet as they tacked on another 2 points in the 32nd and 35th minutes to leave the scoreline Fermoy 0-03 Rossa 1-08. To say we were stunned was an understatement but as I have said before that these men are diehard resilient players and will keep going no matter what adversity they face. We got a lifeline on the 41st minute when we were awarded a penalty for a foot block and David stepped up to strike a lovely shot in to the back of the net. We scored a free in the 47th min from David and he added another in the 53rd minute, again a free. It was now 1-08 to 1-05 in their favour but we were doing well and seemed to have the edge. They got a soft free in the 56th minute to go four points up but again the game was turned on its head with a goal for us on 57 min. A high ball was sent in to the Rossa square and David Lardner reached up towards the sky, caught the ball over his head, landed on terra firma, burst sideways from the goals and blasted an unstoppable bullet of a shot past their helpless goalie for a superb goal. Game on! We did everything in our power in our search for an equaliser but our opponents were playing keep ball and through this succeeded in scoring a priceless point on 60 mins to leave us needing another goal. David scored another free on 63 mins to take his tally for the game to 2-05 and take us back to a one point game. Unfortunately it was too late as the referee blew the final whistle shortly after the kick out. While the result was disappointing we would have to be extremely happy at the response of the team after falling eight points behind. Well done to everyone for a great effort and it makes our meeting with this opponent all the more interesting come championship time. Final Score: Fermoy2-06 O’Donovan Rossa 1-10.

Fermoy 2-09 Clonakilty 4-12
I was unable to attend this game played in Clonakilty on Saturday afternoon last at 4pm. From the reports that I have received, our lads performed tremendously well in the first half before the fitness and guile of our opponents enabled them to pull away from us in the second half. It was a very informative outing for our senior panel who are now under the coaching guise of former Fermoy star Alan O’Connor and it seems that there is plenty of good ahead of us. We look forward to our next outing in the coming week.
