FERMOY GAA ADULT CLUB

DEFEAT IN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

McCarthy Insurance Senior Football League Div 2 Rd 7

Fermoy 0-08 Delaneys 1-11

This game was played on Saturday evening last in what can only be described as terrible weather conditions. The rain fell and the wind whipped up as all players on both sides attempted to negotiate through the quagmire that lay in front of them. It was Delaneys who overcame the conditions more than us especially in the first half where they got a lot of scores and we were just about hanging in there. It was a forgettable half for us where we found it difficult to hold on to the ball and when we created chances we were unable to capitalise as we either dropped the ball or just made the wrong decision at the critical time. To be fair to our lads the second half response was very good but our mistakes and mishandling of the ball was our downfall.

In a forgettable first half for us Delaneys went about their business using the brisk wind that was blowing in their favour to good effect in the opening half. They opened the scoring on 7 mins and what followed was a flow of scores that had no reply from us until the 25th minute. They scored on 10m, 12m, 15m, 19m,and 24n to go 06-00. As I highlighted above our first score of the game arrived on 25 mins through a Padraig de Roiste point. It got worse up to hal time as on 27 mins they got point number 7 which was followed by another on 29m. As if things could not get any worse they scored a goal in the 30th minute and followed this with a point in the first minute of added on time. To everyone’s relief the half time whistle was blown and it was time to take stock and figure a way to get back into this game. Half time: Fermoy 0-01 Delaneys 1-09

We came out in the second half and the boys really gave it a shot. Shane Aherne got the ball rolling with a point on 31 mins which was followed by a Martin Brennan point a minute later after a very poor kick out by the goalkeeper. The goalie repeated this on the next kick out to gift another point to us through the boot of sub Ben Twomey to make it 1-09 to 0-04 to them and all of a suydden things looked a bit better. They hit us on a counter attack in the 34th minute and shot over a point from a free to ease their worries but we got going again soon after this. Liam sent over a superb “45” in the 39th minute but we started making a few mistakes after this which killed our momentum. Our next score was a Ben free on 45 mins and another on 47 mins to leave 6 points between the teams. We never got any closer than this as they scored a close in free on 49 mins to go seven up. Our only riposte to this after a lot of possession but very little reward except for aa Gary O’Callaghan point in the 59th minute. Soon after this the final whistle was blown and the victory belonged to the visitors. Our lads were short a few regulars and had a few injuries during the game whereas Delaneys, I believe, had a full strength squad. They will leave Fermoy believing that they have the upper hand leading in to the championship fixture but as they say sport is fickle but let’s wait and see how it goes!! Final score: Fermoy 0-08 Delaneys 1-11
