FERMOY GAA ADULT CLUB

DEFEAT IN BALLYNOE

Red FM Hurling League Div 2 Rd 7

Fermoy 1-10 Erins Own 1-21

Being two points up at half-time no Fermoy supporter would have envisioned the dominant display and victory that Erins Own inflicted on us on a beautiful sunny evening in Ballynoe. We were down a few regulars due to injuries and the match being brought forward from the weekend but the lads who played more than held their own in the first half. This was a chastening experience for us as our opponents really opened up and to be fair we had no answers as they knocked over lots of scores. We now move on to our remaining two games and hopefully we will get back our confidence and get a couple of victories.

The way the game began was a pre-cursor to the way the second half panned out. Our opponents knocked over three points in the first 4 mins and things could have been worse as there was a great double save from Shane Coughlan in goals to prevent a certain goal for them. Darragh Daly got us off the mark with a free on 5 mins but they scored a free on 9 mins to go three ahead again. Darragh scored a free on 11 mins and they replied with a point from play in the 12th minute. Arlen got a point for us on 14 mins from play which was followed by a point for Erins Own on 16 mins, Darragh scored a free on 17 mins, followed by a point from Jake Carr on 18 mins to make the score 0-06 to 0-05 in favour of Erins Own. Martin Brennan chipped in with the equalising point in the 20th minute before two points in the 23rd and 24th mins put our opponents back in front. We turned the game on its head on 25 mins with a super goal from Arlen after some fabulous play from Jake to go one up. Martin, with a point from play on 27 mins, put us further ahead as half time approached. Both teams scored two points each in the added on time with our scores coming from a Darragh free and a second point from Jake. We were hanging in there and survived as our opponents had some very poor wides in the half that had they scored it would have been a different complexion on the scoreboard. Half Time: Fermoy 1-09 Erins Own 0-10.

The second half was totally forgettable from our point of view as our opponents scored 1-11 to our 0-01 and there was nothing we could do to prevent it. At no stage did out boys let their heads down as they kept trying as hard as they could to get back in to the game. We had some frees towards the end of the game that we could have pointed but we went for goals which were blocked and cleared away each time. Our inexperience showed in the second half where the senior premier side showed all their guile and physicality in ensuring their victory. Our one score of the second half was a free from Darragh in the 35th minute. At the final whistle we took this on the chin and we now move on. Hard luck to the boys and I’m certain that we will have a lot better experience in our next game. Full time: Fermoy 1-10 Erins Own 1-21. Fermoy Abu!
