FERMOY GAA ADULT CLUB

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2024 COMMENCE THIS WEEKEND

Now that the inter-county championships are over is now that time of the year when the Cork county and divisions championships commence this weekend. We are all looking forward as to how our club will fare this year after what we would consider was a disappointing year in 2023.

We begin our quest in the senior A football championship when we lock horns with an opponent from last year, O’Donovan Rossa. When we met last year it was the final group game and we needed to win to avoid going in to the relegation final. As it turned out we lost by a goal and ended up in the relegation battle with Ilen Rovers where we succeeded in winning and kept our senior A status. There was a very controversial moment in this game when Darragh Daly scored a tremendous solo goal only for it to be disallowed by a poor refereeing decision when he decided he over carried the ball. It was later proved on video that this was not the case and this decision had a huge bearing on the result.

We meet again this year where our boys will be eager to overturn last year’s result and get off to a flying start in our group. Our other opponents in the group are Dohenys from Dunmanway and another team we met in last year’s group, Kanturk. This is a bit of a group of death as it seems that all the four teams are evenly matched and anyone can succeed but we will be hoping to be one of these. The game versus O’Donovan Rossa takes place in Bandon, same as last year, on Saturday July 27th @17.30. We wish the team and management the very best of luck and hopefully get off to the perfect start to the 2024 football championship.

In the North Cork championship 2024 we begin with a huge local derby against our close neighbours Ballyhooly in Glanworth on Sunday July 28th @18.30. We are in Group 1 which contains Mallow, Clyda Rovers and Ballyhooly. This is a very tough group and we wish the lads the best of luck in their quest for a North Cork title.
