FERMOY GAA ADULT CLUB

UNDESERVED LOSSES IN FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES

We came away from Bandon on Saturday and Killavullen on Sunday last greatly disappointed in both results of our football championship openers. In Bandon we played some excellent football overall but a few mistakes and an over fussy referee swung the game to O’Donovan Rossa who won it with a last kick free. I am not a person who dwells on refereeing decisions but the man in the middle made some baffling ones to say the least. On Sunday morning in Killavullen, our Junior A team were so close to winning but for two very costly mistakes at the end. We have a very important fixture against Dohenys in the senior grade while our second junior game is against Clyda Rovers, both in two weeks’ time. Hopefully we will be successful in both and get our season up and running.

McCarthy Insurance Senior A Football Championship Round 1

Fermoy 0-16 O’Donovan Rossa 1-14

A sizeable crowd was in attendance at a very well laid out Bandon venue on the afternoon of Saturday 27th July where the sun was shining and a stiff breeze was blowing across the field. Fermoy started off like a train as we shot over our first point in the first minute after a fantastic move from the team. Two minutes later Tomas Clancy, who had a great game, put us two points up before Rossa replied with their opening point in the fourth minute and the equaliser on 5 mins. Ben Twomey, who was excellent throughout, scored a free on 6 mins to put us ahead again. There was a lull in the scoring for the next 8 minutes in which time our opponents kicked several poor wides. Fermoy were rocked back in the 14th minute when their number 12 played a one-two to a teammate down the left wing before cutting inside the area to blast an unstoppable shot past our goalie Liam Coleman. Although we were knocked back by this it only seemed to spur the boys on and the response was superb. A Ben point from play on 17 mins and a pointed free from the same player had us level again by the 19th minute. Another great point from play by Ben on 20 mins and a super Padraig de Roiste point in the 28th minute had us two up. Our opponents managed to claw back a point on the 30th minute to leave a point between us at the half time whistle. Half time: Fermoy 0-07 O’Donovan Rossa 1-03.

Nothing that we had seen so far in this game prepared us for the drama that unfolded in the second half. From a playing point of view we were on top and were looking good for the victory. Elementary mistakes were our downfall and a referee who gave a few frees against us that were very dubious to say the least. Anyway on to the action! Ben started the 2nd half scoring with a pointed free on 32 mins and this was cancelled out by Rossa with a point from play on 33 mins. Ben pointed another free on 35 mins but again Rossa cancelled this out with another point from play on 36 mins. We scored a point from play by Padraig almost immediately after our kick out but they responded with a pointed free on 37 mins. Ben put us two points up with a lovely point in the 38th minute before Rossa got one back on 45 mins. The pattern continued as Ben with another point from play made it a two point game again on 46mins, again Rossa replied with a pointed free on 48 mins, a Ben free on 49 mins was followed by a Rossa point in the 50th minute to make the score line at this stage read Fermoy 0-13 O’Donovan Rossa 1-09. The pattern changed in the next 3 mins when Rossa scored two points from play on 52 and 53 mins respectively to draw the game. Substitute Arlen Aherne put us ahead with a point on 54 mins and we were looking in control. This was when the referee seemed to take a different attitude to the game. He awarded a free against us in front of our goal for a totally innocuous tackle which they scored to equalise on 55 mins but again a Ben free put us ahead again a minute later. The ball arrived in to our goalmouth again a minute later and next thing we know the ref has blown for a close in free kick against us. Our supporters could not believe it as they kicked over the equaliser in the 57th minute. We were thinking that a draw would be a very good result but to be fair to the lads they had other ideas and went for broke. We were starting a counter attack in the 60th minute when we were dispossessed in the middle of the field and Rossa surged forward. They got the ball to a scoring forward who was just outside our “21”, he went for the kick and we tried to block it but we were in vain as the ball sailed over the bar to give them the lead at the death. We did not get a chance to respond as the referee called for the ball before our kick out.

A super effort by the lads and deserved at least a draw. To a man they were a credit to themselves and the club and I firmly believe that their luck will turn soon. Well done and hard luck! Fermoy Abu!

Synergy Fermoy Credit Union Centenary Junior A Football Championship Round 1

Fermoy 2-14 Ballyhooly 3-12

This game was played at an earlier time than previously advertised in a sun drenched Killavullen on Sunday last. This was another stellar performance by a Fermoy team who never gave up and ran themselves in to the ground in search of victory. Their valiant quest was stopped short at the death just like the seniors but again they were a credit to us all on the day. We got the scoring going when Ronan O’Callaghan kicked over a point from play in the first minute after a lovely pass from Cian O’Carroll. Cian himself put us two up with a superb free on the 45m line which he curled in over the bar. We were rocked back in the 5th minute when Ballyhooly scored a goal from their first attack as their huge full forward caught the ball out of the air and smashed it past our goalie Ryan Sargent. They added on a point in the 6th minute to go two up. We levelled the game with points from a Ronan free on 9 mins followed by a lovely Jack Murray point on 10 mins. They went ahead on 11 mins with a pointed free before Ronan buried the ball in to the Ballyhooly net for a goal to us in the 14th minute. It was now 1-04 to 1-02 to us but Ballyhooly went into the ascendency for the next 6 minutes. They scored points on 15 mins, a free on 16 mins and two more from play in the 19th and 20th minutes respectively to make it 1-06 to 1-04 in their favour. Sam Twomey sent over a lovely point from play in the 21st minute and a Cian free, again from the 45 metre line, made the game a draw on 26 mins. Ballyhooly finished the last few minutes up to half time the stronger and scored two frees on 28 mins and 30 mins. We felt at half time that we were in with a great chance of winning the game if we kept playing the way we were.

We reached parity with our opponents by the 35th minute with points from Danny O’Flynn, after a great block by Niall Cloney in our back line, and a point from the superb James Molloy. I would say that Ballyhooly would not like to meet James Molloy in another game any time soon! Bally went ahead again on 36 mins with a point from play before a second Jack Murray point on 38 mins levelled the game again. We were playing very well and were rewarded when we strode in to a two point lead by the 45th minute with points from Danny and James. Disaster struck when a defensive blunder led to a goal for our opponents in the46th minute to put them a point up as the score now read Fermoy 1-11 Ballyhooly 2-09. They scored a point in the 50th minute to go two up and then we got a massive chance to get back in the game when we were awarded a penalty in the 52nd min for a foot block on Cian as he was about to shoot the ball in to the net. There was a big delay before the penalty was taken as Ryan in goal got an injury that had to be attended to. Ronan took the penalty after this long delay and to be fair to him he hit it poorly and it went wide, the delay definitely did not help him. To the whole team’s credit they dug in and we equalised on 55 mins with a great point from Jack before edging ahead with a free from Ronan a minute later. We went two points up with a great point from James on 58 mins and we now had the scent of victory in our nostrils. They pulled a point back on 60 mins when a poor kick out went straight to a Bally player and he put it over the bar. Another poor kick out resulted in Ryan taking down the inrushing forward to concede a penalty which initially saved brilliantly by Ryan but the rebound was won by them and buried in to the back of the net. Ryan got a bad injury during this paly and had to go off to be replaced by Killian Bratchford. From the next kick out their midfielder caught the ball and scored unopposed to make it a 4 point game all of a sudden. Again the boys attacked and were awarded another penalty for another foot block on 64 mins. The brave Ronan again stepped up and this time he made no mistake, shooting the ball in to the corner to bring the score down to a point. Alas the referee blew the whistle before the kick out to end a very exciting encounter. Well done to the whole team for a huge effort and hard luck on coming up just short at the end. Onwards and upwards! Final score Fermoy 2-14 Ballyhooly 3-12
