Fermoy 0-16 Castlelyons 2-17

We headed over to Rathcormac on Friday evening last being fully aware of the challenge that Castlelyons would present to us but nothing prepared us for the way this game panned out. It would be safe to say that we were well beaten in all facets of the match and you could see the huge disappointment in the boys faces as they faced up to a huddle at the end of the match. The Fermoy management took a huge gamble with their selection, opting for youth and inexperience as opposed to starting the more experienced lads. Castlelyons were a lot more physical and savvy than us and could have been well ahead at the short whistle as they had 10 wides and 4 balls that dropped in to goalkeeper Shane Coughlan’s hands. We did not pose any real threat in the first half only two possible penalties denied by the referee. We only really goit to grips with the game in the final ten minutes but at this stage the game as a contest was over. In the next round we face a do or die game against our regular nemesis Cloyne where the loser will almost certainly face a relegation battle.

The first twenty minutes gave no one in the ground any indication of what was to unfold for the following forty minutes. It was nip and tuck on the scoreboard. Castlelyons opened the scoring after a minute with a point from play before Darragh Daly equalised for us on 4 mins. They got their second in the 4th min but a Darragh free levelled it up on 6 mins. Darragh put us ahead with a free on 7 mins and this was cancelled out on 11 mins to make it0-03 each. Two points from play on 13 and 16 mins put our opponents two up, David O’Callaghan pulled one back on 20 mins before Castlelyons struck for the opening goal of the game on 22 mins. A long puck from their goalie into our area was not dealt with in the Fermoy defence and the ball fell gratefully in to an inrushing forward who struck the sliothar in to the corner of the Fermoy net giving Shane no chance to save it. It was now 1-06 to 0-04 to Castlelyons and the goal really put the wind in their sails. They took over all over the pitch and as I remarked earlier if they had their shooting sorted the game would have been over at halftime. Two more points, one from play on 21 mins and a free in the 22nd minute increased their lead to 7 points but we responded with two of our own through a Darragh free on 28 mins and a Jake Carr free on 29 mins. Immediately after the puck out, Castlelyons scored the final point of the half to make it Fermoy 0-06 Castlelyons 1-09. Shell shocked is a word I would use to describe the Fermoy supporters feelings at this stage and we were thinking that a few changes would help us come back in to the game in the second half.

I’M afraid that the comeback did not materialise as Castlelyons grabbed the bull by the horns and drove on again on the resumption. They had three more points on the board by the 37th min with 2 frees and a “65” putting them nine pints ahead. We made some substitutions at this stage to try and raise some form of resistance to this onslaught Kieran Morrisson, Martin Brennan and Cillian Fitzpatrick entering the fray. To be fair to these three men they did shore things up as the second half progressed with Martin scoring 3 points from play in the process. Jake scored a free on 38 mins to open our second half account but they replied with a point from play on 42 mins. Padraig de Roiste scored a well taken point on 44 mins but they reacted with a point straight away. The game was put to bed on 45 mins with Castlelyons second goal. A fairly innocent ball in to our defence was not cleared and a Castlelyons forward pounced on to it, raced away from our backtracking defenders before shooting past Shane and into the net. This was a killer blow!  Fermoy reacted by scoring the next four points, Martin on 46 mins, Darragh with two frees on 47 and 50 mins then Darragh from play on 51 mins to make the score read Fermoy 0-12 to Castlelyons 2-14 with 9 mins remaining. To be fair to the boys this was a very good response to that second goal. Our opponents stopped our mini comeback with a pointed free on 53 mins and a point from play in the 54th min. Martin got his second point from play in the 55th min before Castlelyons got what turned out to be their final score with a pointed free in the 57th minute. The Fermoy boys kept going even though they knew that the game was done and dusted. Martin got his third point from play on 59 mins, Darragh with a point from paly in the 60th minute and sub Brian O’Sullivan hit over the final point of the game in the 63rd minute.  The referee blew the final whistle and the Castlelyons players and supporters jumped for joy as we trooped dejectedly back to our dugout. Well done to Castlelyons on their victory while we must go away and plan the takedown of Cloyne. A lot of soul searching is needed as the management need to find the fight balance for what will be our biggest game of hurling so far this year. We wish them all the best of luck.
