McCarthy Insurance Senior A Football Championship Round 2

Fermoy 1-08 Dohenys 1-13

Coming from nine points down at half time to try and be victorious in this game was a tall order for us as we encountered Dohenys in Ballygarvan on Saturday evening last. After losing narrowly to O’Donovan Rossa in the previous round hopes were high that we could get the two points and ease our way back in to championship contention. We gave ourselves a huge uphill battle as we gave up 1-10 to our opponents in the first half while shooting seven scoreable wides and a few shots into their goalies hands. With all due credit to the boys they fought to the end but it wasn’t to be.

As the Fermoy supporters arrived in Ballygarvan we learned that we were missing three starters from the first match and to be honest they were a huge loss. Injuries to Adam Creed and Shane Aherne aligned to Seanie Shanahan out due to sickness made a huge dent in our chances of victory. Dohenys won the toss and opted to play with what would be considered quite a strong wind in the opening half. From the early outset we realised that one of their corner forwards was a huge threat in the inside line and it proved to be the case as he caused havoc every time the ball went in. If he wasn’t scoring he was being fouled leading to frees which they gratefully converted. They opened the scoring with a free on 2 mins before adding another on 4 mins. Gary O’Callaghan got our opening point in the 8th minute when he grabbed the ball on the 21 metre line, was almost mauled to the ground before side footing the ball over the bar with the outside of his left foot as he was being thrown to the ground. They made it 0-03 to 0-01 with their first point from play on 9 mins before Ben Twomey got his first score of the game with a pointed free in the 10th minute. It was in the next 18 minutes that the game was turned on its head as Dohenys scored 1-05 without reply as we shot some scoreable wides and made some poor decisions as well. Reading this it might come across as criticism but believe me the lads tried their best with good counter attacking and it was our scoring boots that left us down. Points on 14m, 16m (f), 19m, 20m and 22 mins gave Dohenys a vital lead before they scored a well worked goal in the 24th minute to make it 1-08 to 0-02 to them. Ben got a point on 28 mins which was cancelled out with a point by Dohenys on 29 mins. We scored a free each before the half time whistle, ours by Ben. It was with a sense of relief that the whistle blew for half time and we could go in and try and sort out a way of getting back in to the game.

Half Time: Fermoy 0-04 Dohenys 1-10

We made three substitutions at the interval and it was one of these, David Lardner who got us up and running with a pointed mark on 31 mins. Almost immediately after this we had a glorious chance to keep that momentum going when we got a scoreable free but missed it. They scored a free on 37 mins to ease any worries that we were going to get back in to the game. The second half turned in to a bit of a slugging match with Fermoy trying to create chances but not succeeding as Dohenys went defensive and were holding on to possession, playing the ball around in the middle of the field and not doing much attacking. Ben scored a brilliant “45” in the 39th minute and the next score was a David point from a free on 49 minutes. Padraig De Roiste scored a nice point for us on 51 mins to now make the score Fermoy 0-08 Dohenys 1-11. Maybe, just maybe! A free on 54 mins settled a few Dohenys nerves but we gave them something to think about when we got a super team goal finished to the net by Ben in the 57th minute to make it a 4 point game. We tried for the next few minutes to get possession of the ball but our opponents killed the game by passing it over and back across the pitch giving us very little chance to get another goal. They put the final nail in our coffin with a point in the 62nd minute to end up winning by a 5 point margin. Final Score: Fermoy 1-08 Dohenys 1-13.

Well done to the lads for a trojan effort considering all the circumstances and we must now get ready for the huge challenge that the high flying Kanturk team will present in 3 weeks’ time. This is our opportunity to avoid a relegation dogfight and hopefully we will have a fully fit team to face the challenge. Fermoy Abu!
